Renewable Energy at The Manor House

Following the successful implementation of various renewable technologies at the Terrace Playing Fields a few years ago, the town council has recently completed an ambitious energy-efficient project for the town council offices, at the historic Manor House, a cornerstone of our community. This initiative reflects the council’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and its dedication to reduce the carbon footprint of public buildings.

The highlight of the project is the installation of a solar canopy featuring up to 31 kW of solar, strategically placed over a designated area in the rear car park. This solar installation not only harnesses the power of the sun to generate renewable energy but also serves as a model for future projects in our town. Complementing this, the project includes three state-of-the-art air source heat pumps. These pumps are designed to enhance heating efficiency throughout the building, ensuring a comfortable environment during colder months while significantly reducing energy consumption.

In addition to the solar canopy and heat pumps, various upgrades to the heating system have been implemented to maximize efficiency and optimize overall performance. A noteworthy addition is the installation of a 22 kW Zappi car charger, which has been specifically designed to charge electric vehicles only when there is excess power being generated. This innovative technology not only mitigates energy waste but also encourages the use of electric vehicles within our community, aligning with our broader environmental goals.

It is estimated that this exciting project will produce about 30,000 kWh of energy annually, leading to a reduction of 7.5 tons of CO2 emissions each year. The environmental benefits are significant, contributing to our town’s efforts to combat climate change and promote greener living. The total investment for this impactful project exceeded £150,000, with 50% of the funding generously provided by Low Carbon Dorset. This partnership underscores the importance of collaborative efforts in advancing sustainability initiatives.

Looking ahead, the town council is committed to exploring additional external funding opportunities that could support future projects in areas owned by the town council aimed at enhancing sustainability. Potential initiatives may include the introduction of secondary glazing, which could improve energy efficiency by reducing heat loss, as well as the installation of new energy-efficient LED lighting in council buildings. These upgrades will help to promote energy conservation.

The commitment to sustainability goes hand-in-hand with the council’s broader goal of achieving carbon neutrality. Having previously declared a climate emergency; the council is dedicated to examining all aspects of its operations. This encompasses not only energy usage but also waste management, transportation, and public engagement. By integrating these values into our planning and execution of projects, the town council aims to lead by example, inspiring residents to adopt more sustainable practices in their own lives. Together, we can create a more resilient and environmentally conscious community for generations to come.
