There has been a lot of tree planting taking place across Sherborne over the last few months and more planned for later in the year.
Sherborne Town Council’s Green Sherborne Forward Plan and Environmentally Friendly Planting Policy have been at the forefront of many new trees being planted across the local community.
In honour of the Queens’ Accession Day on 6th February a Liquidambar tree was planted by Mayor Cllr Anne Hall and some of the Sherborne town councillors in the ‘Pony Paddock’ adjacent to the Westbridge Park allotments site.
In order to maintain the Pony Paddock and the allotments on the West of Sherborne, as a green corridor, breathing space for the town and conservation area for Orchids and Dormice which have been discovered there, further trees are being planted under the guidance of EuCAN.
The number of allotments on the edge of this area is being increased with newly sized, easier to manage plots being introduced.
Last year Sherborne Town Council were given 15 Cherry trees from the Sakura Cherry Tree Project as a symbol of friendship and co-operation between the UK and Japan.
The trees have been planted in two locations in the town – at the new cemetery some have been planted for those who have lost loved ones, as a place to reflect.
In Pageant Gardens a line of cherry trees has been planted alongside the perimeter path and parallel on the other side of the path, with a view to eventually creating a cherry blossom avenue of arching trees, as a space for contemplation.
From Lambsfield, through Granville Way to Albany Close, individual and small groups of young trees have been planted. Saplings have also been planted in hedgerows at the Terraces. Many of these trees have been donated by the Woodland Trust
Along with tree planting there has recently been the introduction of insect and butterfly boxes in Pageant Gardens along with Owl boxes for Tawny and Little Owls, to create a haven for wildlife.
New lecterns have been erected in Pageant Gardens which include the history of the gardens. These are made from recycled plastic and were bought after a kind donation from the Dorset Gardens Trust.
