There are currently 45 members of the SBKA, many of whom live in the numerous villages and communities around Sherborne. The experience of beekeeping varies among members’; some are just starting and some who have kept bees for 30 years or more.
Our aim is to share our experience, improve the standard of beekeeping and raise awareness of the benefits and enjoyment of beekeeping to the public.
During the beekeeping season, we host regular monthly visits to apiaries and during the winter season there are a range indoor meetings when we invite speakers from outside to talk on a wide range of subjects relating to our interests
Our Association Apiary near Leweston aims to give new beekeepers or anyone interested in taking up beekeeping the opportunity to experience and to gain confidence in looking after bees. New beekeepers can also call on a “mentor” who are always willing to give assistance if needed. Despite the limitations of Covid, we are continuing to plan an on-line training course for beginners, with the hope of returning to hands-on activities in the spring.
The apiary produces plenty of high quality local honey, which can be found in our local shops, but the committee is dedicated to educating and encouraging the art of beekeeping. We hope that we are able to foster good husbandry, and give people a better understanding of the importance of all insects for bio-diversity.
