The town council is pleased to report that the installation of town centre CCTV will take place later this week, specifically on Thursday, June 19th, and Friday, June 20th. This significant initiative aims to enhance security and safety in our community, providing increased peace of mind for residents, visitors, and local businesses. The images will be monitored by Dorset Council via their specialist control room.
The final locations for the CCTV cameras have been carefully selected to ensure optimal coverage and monitoring of critical areas within our town. The designated spots are as follows:
Greenhill: The camera will be mounted on the black lamp post situated at the roundabout, a high-traffic area that will benefit from enhanced surveillance.
Cheap Street (two cameras): One will be outside the Sherborne Antiques Market, right in the middle of the street, while the second will be placed outside Capital Carpets, at the top of the street. These locations are vital for safeguarding our local businesses and their customers.
Half Moon Street: A camera will be installed outside the Weldmar Hospicecare charity shop, ensuring that this busy location is monitored.
Pageant Gardens: The camera here will be situated on the column positioned on the railway station side, allowing us to keep an eye on this popular recreational area and its proximity to public transport.
Terrace Playing Fields: Located on the column that has been installed at the top of the car park, this location will help monitor activity and ensure safety for families and children who frequent the playing fields.
It is important to note that this project is fully funded by Dorset Council through a government grant, reflecting our commitment to community safety and resource allocation. In addition, some associated costs—including ongoing electricity expenses—will be covered by the town council. Separate electric meters have already been installed to manage and track these costs effectively.
As part of our commitment to transparency and continuous improvement, the project will be reviewed by all relevant parties over the five-year contract period. This review process will assess the effectiveness of the CCTV system, its impact on reducing crime, and any necessary adjustments to enhance its functionality.
