Beauty may be in the eye of the beholder but in Sherborne it is more than skin deep. Yes, it is handsome and historic — a brace of castles, hamstone and half-timbers and an abbey that glows gold in the morning sun — but it’s the friendly, energetic population that gives the town its “rizz”.
There are more than 200 community groups covering every conceivable interest, from sport and U3A to the Quarr nature reserve and the Sherborne Community Kitchen. There’s a prestigious annual music festival at Sherborne Abbey and the imminent reopening of Sherborne House as a high-end arts and community centre after years of restoration will add extra cachet to a town that already has a perceptible spring in its step.
“Sherborne is a town where people can aim high, and it’s also somewhere people put in the effort to get things done off their own bat — and it’s a place that recognises the value of that,” says James Budden, a painter who runs Sherborne Arts, which organises an annual exhibition and runs affordable art classes.
